Harvest Management.

Barnes & Associates has extensive experience in managing harvest operations which is essential in forest management. It takes many years for a stand to reach merchantable size. We use our expertise to work with the client to develop a plan for maximizing their return from harvest operations. In some cases this may be selling timber sales. In other cases we may market and sell delivered logs and work directly with reputable loggers who will complete the harvesting.

Proper harvest management assures the most value is obtained for the timber owner while soil, streams, wildlife and other resources are protected. Harvesting is designed to optimize the future productivity of the land and overall health of the forest.

Our harvest management services typically include:

  • Work with the landowner to determine their land management objectives and advise them on how to best meet those goals.
  • Develop a logging plan or timber sale which best meets the landowner's objectives and protects the soil, streams, domestic water sources, wildlife and other resources. This plan must also meet all regulations and legal requirements.
  • Determine needs for new road construction. Design and manage road construction and maintenance activities.
  • Determine road access requirements and obtain legal access if needed.
  • Evaluate property line survey needs. If necessary, obtain bids and arrange for survey services.
  • Market logs/timber to maximize timber value.
  • Submit required Notifications of Operations and prepare written plans as necessary.
  • Solicit bids from reputable loggers.
  • Administer logging operations.
  • Coordinate execution of timber sale contracts or logging contracts and log sales agreements.
  • Review log payments from mills to assure all logs are accounted for and paid for at the proper rate.
  • Calculate and distribute payments to contractors and landowner. Provide copies of all documents and calculate timber taxes at the end of the year.
  • Manage reforestation operations to assure the land is left in a productive state after harvest as required by the Oregon Forest Practices Act.
  • Manage entire operation to meet the landowner's objectives and all legal requirements and regulations.

Barnes & Associates earned a Certificate of Commendation from the Oregon Department of Forestry for our management of a challenging harvest operation. This certificate was awarded for Barnes' "...effective sale preparation, layout and administration... With their assistance, this operation exceeded the requirements of the Oregon Forest Practices Act and stands as an example of exceptional forest management."
